8mm HD Film Transfer Comparison

Posted in Blog by gotmemories

Video below uploaded by customer, competitor in comparison.

* PLEASE NOTE!!
To watch in HD BE SURE TO HIT '720p HD' TAB ON BASE OF VIDEO BELOW.
To do that , run mouse over bottom of player, click on the 360p and wack it up to 720p.

Got Memories is now offering High Definition film transfers from Regular 8mm & Super 8 movie film to 720p HD Motion JPEG files and Blu Ray.
A lot of people wonder, is it worth it, my film is 60 years old, how good can it be? The answer is, potentially amazing! Of course, it's not going to have the amazing clarity of picture quality as we know it today, but the detail, the grain, the richness of the picture is there and it's detail that's not even been seen with the naked eye until now.
I personally LOVE the look of the grain and richness of the picture, some people think it's harsh and prefer standard definition film transfers because it does produce, sometimes, a smoother look, because the cameras are not picking up the detail of the film.

Above are videos. The first one is Phil explaining the clips. Second is a transfer done by homemoviedepot.com. Now let me be clear, we are not negative name bashers, this is fact, the user ID is under a guy named Larry Tocci, who you can contact and verify, but his story was one of many that we hear....paying good money for poor quality transfers. His original films looked great on the projector, but the sharpness, detail, colors on the transfer were terrible and to add, there were scratches & dirt showing up that weren't showing on the projection. This is due to the light source and capture method used. The third video is a redo by us to 720p HD, cleaned up and looking great. Now just to note, even the HD transfer on YouTube is compressed heavily, so this is not a fair representation of what the original file was. The main thing we notice in our tests is when you blow the picture up on todays larger LCD TV's the HD transfer has a considerable difference to SD when the picture is stretched. The detail and sharpness of the picture remains on even 65" LCD's. It's amazing when you think the original image is half that of your pinky nail!

Q: The film image is very dark, red-orange with hardly any other color, and
streaky. What happened?
A:The camera was threaded incorrectly, with the dark side and not the
light side towards the lens.

Q: The film is all biased orange/red and excessively warm. Why?
A: Either daylight balance film was used under movie lights without a
filter, or else the correct tungsten balance film was used indoors but
with the daylight correction (#85, or type A) filter wrongly in place.*

Q:The film is all biased purple/blue and excessively cold. Why?
A:Either tungsten balance film was used outdoors without the daylight
correction (No. 85 or type A) filter, or else the correct daylight
balance film was used outdoors but with the tungsten correction (type
80B) filter wrongly in place.*

*Color movie film used to be made in two types: Daylight and Type A.
Daylight gave fine color when exposed with sunlight outdoors. Type A
gave fine color when exposed with short-lived (3 hour) photo flood lights
indoors. Type A also gave fine color when exposed with sunlight outdoors
through a Type A (No. 85) daylight conversion filter. Any other
combination gave bad color. Additionally the film would come out
greenish under fluorescent lights or mercury streetlights, pure yellow
under sodium streetlights, bluish on a cloudy day or in the shade, and
yellowish if filming with ordinary household light bulbs.

Projecting off-color film directly might not look so bad, compared to a
video transfer. This is because: 1. Movies are projected in the dark so
your eyes will adapt to it somewhat, while video is viewed with the room
lights on so your eyes will not adapt. 2. Movie screens are generally
not as bright as a TV set and your eyes are then not as sensitive to
color problems. 3. Video does not have the latitude that your eye and
color film have, so if the color is too far off it will saturate the
color signal and gradations in color will disappear. You can best judge
a films color over a white light box to give you a reference white,
not using a projector.

The Got Memories Difference

Posted in Blog by PhilThomas

What sets Got Memories apart from the competition...these are your one off memories, in this video
are the topics and questions you should be asking from a company you are going to trust with your life!

The number one concern we hear from our customers is that they have a single copy of their precious home movies. They want to know who is doing the work, what the interior looks like, are they professional, safe, clean, organized, not going anywhere, and are using the right equipment to do a quality transfer?
We want to give you complete peace of mind by showing you the clear difference between Got Memories versus the vast array of film transfer and video companies out there competing to convert your home movies. You will not find a video like this on any home movie transfer companies website, period.
We are passionate about service and quality, and that passion is reflected in the time taken to produce these videos. We are very proud of how we do business.
We listen to our customers and in return we have made a video like this so you can feel safe and secure that your precious memories are taken care of in an organized, clean, professional work place with passionate people treating your memories like they are our own!

If you do a search for film to dvd transfers, or vhs to dvd on Google, you are going to come up with over 3 million results. This video will go over some areas to look for in a company, that you are going to trust with your home movie film and video tapes. Some areas of this video will cover how we process your orders into our computerized online tracking system. How we seal and pack your media once in our location so we know exactly where your home movies are at every step of the process at Got Memories. The video will also cover footage of how other companies operate, which is 90% of the time in complete anonymity, working behind closed doors and verbal descriptions of processes on websites, with no actual footage of their facility, equipment and processes of exactly how they are converting film or video. The reasons being are due to consumer grade, unprofessional methods. Here at Got Memories, we take immense pride in our facility and how we transfer film & video tape. If you are local in Phoenix, we welcome tours and sample transfers, as you'd instinctively expect from a home movie transfer business.
Thank you again, and remember if a video transfer company can't produce a simple video on their facility & how they convert film & video tapes, I think you should wonder why?

Below are shocking pictures & video of how companies are converting film. You'll see on every website, self congratulating write ups about how amazing their product is, different levels of quality, descriptions about the marvels of their technology, but in the end, it's all complete lies. Setups are like this across the industry. To weed out them out, ask these two simple questions:
1. Can you provide me with a video of your equipment and how you convert film?
2. Can I come to your place of business and view your equipment and process?
If businesses are unwilling to fulfill these two SIMPLE requests, they are converting film like below. No excuses, do not converse any longer, just hang up! At Got Memories, we show you exactly how we convert film, the ONLY company that shows you how it's done.
Some of the best known companies that Costco & Wal Mart uses project film onto a wall!

Movie film projectors can ruin film

Posted in Blog by gotmemories
If you run your 8mm, Super 8 or 16mm movie film through a projector, you do run the risk of damaging your film. Here is a video showing you regular 8mm film with damaged and stripped sprocket holes caused by a 8mm projector picked up via an auction site, note this section of film with this many missing sprocket holes can not be converted.

Dec 201007
The way we do business at Got Memories is very, well, open, honest, and 2011 standards.
The way most film transfer companies share information about how they transfer film is, well, very secretive and closed off. That may have worked in the 1980's, but in 2011 with YouTube, social media and the likes, people are talking, chatting and the power is shifting to the consumer big time. Review sites, video sites, it's all out there, people are getting educated and not trusting face value from web 1.0 tactics from the owners. On gotmemories.com , we are creating more educational content that is real and valuable to everyone. It's easy to come up with content, it's easy to make a video and put it online for the world to see that can call BS, or GREAT! It's in your hands!

The power is turning in favor of the consumer (yay, because I'm one too!) So the days of film transfer companies not disclosing their transfer methods to the public for fear of someone stealing their 'equipment technology' that story is ' Sooo 1988 ' time to fess up and
disclose exactly how they are converting film. On our previous blog we showed pictures of setups that we have found from individuals and companies alike. Here we have exclusive footage that was given to us by a former employee of a film transfer company that we shall not name. This video shows exactly what we warn people about: A fancy website with a location 1000miles away from you projecting onto walls.
There are right ways and wrong ways to transfer 8mm, Super 8 & 16mm movie film. This is definitely not the correct way.
