The coolest thing about old home movies was when there was a family get together, and someone would break out the projector to show the funny clips buried in those old home movie film reels. The not-so-cool was having to watch all of the other stuff that was boring. The old projector may have had a fast speed setting to get to the best parts, and maybe it even had reverse to make the scenes even funnier, but it was nothing like a modern DVD player.

We all liked to see dad with the perm he had in the seventies and those platform shoes. Dad wants to forget the seventies, so it makes showing the clips even funnier! And did he really drive an AMC Pacer? Mom remembers the red of that Pacer being much brighter than how it looks on the old home movie film, but that is how it goes as the film of those home movies degrades.

Film is obsolete as an archival media. It was never designed for permanence. It was just the best technology that we had for the time it was invented and used. Technology advances exponentially every few years. We have media formats now that can archive old home movies forever.

The old home movie film is thousands and thousands of still images strung together on a long film reel. When it is dragged through a projector at a certain speed it creates a moving image on the screen. To play the home movies requires equipment that can destroy the film played through it. The projector lamp can melt film in a split second, and the sprockets can tear old home movie film apart just as fast.

Digital is all computer ones and zeroes that stay the same forever. To preserve those old home movies they need to be transferred into digital that can be copied, shared, and edited forever. DVDs can be copied on most any home computer now. And once the old home movies are transferred into digital there is something cooler that can be done with them.

The coolest thing now about home movie films and tapes that have been transferred into digital is that all of the funniest clips can be easily edited at will. You can take those old clips of dad in his leisure suit out by the AMC Pacer and add video effects, music, voice-overs, all to your hearts content. It is easy and even free to do with software such as Windows Movie Maker.
