You just have to go to www.qik.com. That is if you have a modern phone that is video capable, and if you have an unlimited data plan. Why? Well I'm going to go right ahead and tell you!
Qik is a software application (app) available for smartphones such as the iPhone and Android, but they also have apps for a whole bunch of other phones. I downloaded one for my Motorola Q9h which is ancient when compared to the latest and greatest phones that are available.
What does Qik do? It will stream live video as it is captured by your cell phone! I'm talking if you want to record something right now, and have anyone anywhere with an Internet connection be able to watch it, then Qik does it right now! In fact it is so cool and so quick that I highly recommend that you read the instructions before you use it so that no video gets streamed unless you want it to.
By default the app will stream videos publicly meaning anyone can watch them. This could be a problem for a first-time user not aware of how the app works and happens to be live streaming video of something that they otherwise would not want anyone to see. Videos can be set to private, but you need to know what and where to click to make that happen. Easy once you know, but be sure to know first before you run the app.
By going to http://d.qik.com with your phone's web browser, the site will automatically recognize your cell phone type and give you the correct link to download the app. You can set up your free account before you download the app or after.
I was talking with my wife on my cell phone while streaming a live video that she was watching. Plus the video has sound too so the moment is recorded in full-color with good sound. The delay as my video streamed went from 2 seconds, to 9 seconds, and then to 15 seconds. This was due to my 3G connection varying.
Still, I must say how cool it was to show video to my wife at home that only had a few seconds of delay. When I stopped recording, the app finished uploading the rest of what I recorded where it is archived at my own personal Qik Page.
I can't wait to see how the rest of Qik's features work. I read at the website how it interfaces with Facebook and YouTube for videos that I record live from my phone.
Whether you want to share baby's first words with a relative far away, or if you aspire to be an amateur reporter, I must say that Qik (pronounced quick) is cool!
