Got Memories is now offering High Definition film transfers from Regular
8mm & Super 8 movie film to 720p HD Motion JPEG files and Blu Ray. A
lot of people wonder, is it worth it, my film is 60 years old, how good
can it be? The answer is, potentially amazing! Of course, it's not
going to have the amazing clarity of picture quality as we know it
today, but the detail, the grain, the richness of the picture is there
and it's detail that's not even been seen with the naked eye until now. I
personally LOVE the look of the grain and richness of the picture, some
people think it's harsh and prefer standard definition film transfers
because it does produce, sometimes, a smoother look, because the cameras
are not picking up the detail of the film.
Above are videos.
The first one is Phil explaining the clips. Second is a transfer done by
homemoviedepot.com. Now let me be clear, we are not negative name
bashers, this is fact, the user ID is under a guy named Larry Tocci, who
you can contact and verify, but his story was one of many that we
hear....paying good money for poor quality transfers. His original films
looked great on the projector, but the sharpness, detail, colors on the
transfer were terrible and to add, there were scratches & dirt
showing up that weren't showing on the projection. This is due to the
light source and capture method used. The third video is a redo by us to
720p HD, cleaned up and looking great. Now just to note, even the HD
transfer on YouTube is compressed heavily, so this is not a fair
representation of what the original file was. The main thing we notice
in our tests is when you blow the picture up on todays larger LCD TV's
the HD transfer has a considerable difference to SD when the picture is
stretched. The detail and sharpness of the picture remains on even 65"
LCD's. It's amazing when you think the original image is half that of
your pinky nail!
